On August 10, 1961, US troops first used the highly toxic chemical Agent Orange in Vietnam, a mixture of defoliants and synthetic herbicides containing the dangerous mutogen dioxin. The chemical was sprayed using aircraft to destroy the jungle in which the guerrillas were hiding and the fields that provided food for the Vietnamese. However, it had a toxic effect not only on plants, but also on people: it broke the immune system, caused cancer, disrupted metabolic processes in the body and had a catastrophic effect on heredity.
